Summers-Taylor-Awards-optimized.jpgELIZABETHON, Tenn. – Summers-Taylor Inc., headquartered in Elizabethton, Tenn., recently received back-to-back Quality in Construction Awards for excellence in asphalt paving from the National Asphalt and Paving Association (NAPA).

Summers-Taylor was the only highway construction company in the state of Tennessee to be honored for work completed during 2009. The awards represent the second and third NAPA Quality in Construction Awards received by the company.

Founded by company President Rab Summers’ grandfather, Lines R. Taylor, in 1932, Summers-Taylor is considered the largest heavy and highway construction contractor in the tri-state region of Northeast Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and Western North Carolina.

Summers-Taylor was honored for two separate resurfacing projects commissioned in 2009 by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) in Nashville, Tenn.:

  • A 7.3-mile section of state Route 394, a four-lane divided highway in Sullivan County that runs behind Bristol Motor Speedway and parallel to the Bristol Dragway entrance.
  • A three-mile section of Highway U.S. 321, state Route 35, also known as Newport Highway, in Greene County, Tenn.

Significantly, a TDOT report indicated the highway “rideability” (smoothness of ride) had improved by 66 percent for the state Route 394 project and 50 percent for the Highway U.S. 321 project, which Summers-Taylor had executed.

“We are extremely gratified to be recognized by NAPA, which holds companies to the highest possible standards for paving in the industry,” says Summers. “This recognition is difficult to achieve and reflects the high quality of our employees’ work and the overall philosophy that we are always consistent and execute our best efforts on every project.”

NAPA, based in Lanham, Md., is the leading trade association for the asphalt pavement producer and contractor industry in the United States.

According to Jim Weeks, 2009 chairman of the NAPA Board of Directors, the organization’s Quality in Construction Awards only go to U.S. companies that exhibit the highest standards of excellence in the industry.  Notably, Summers-Taylor also received a NAPA Quality in Construction Award in 2008 for the mill and overlay work completed on Interstate 26 in Unicoi County, Tenn.

The company has also received seven statewide awards, including being the inaugural regional winner of the State of Tennessee Highway Quality Award and a six-time winner of the Smooth Paving Award bestowed annually by TDOT.
